Stop F*ckin’ Up Your Kid’s Day

Yeah… Some days I’m deep with the titles. Today, is not one of those days. 😆

Meme Image of two parents hugging their teen children. Text states: “If I had to offer one piece of advice to parents, I’d tell them to use the Golden Rule. Most issues in parent-child relationships occur because we don’t treat our children the way we want to be treated.”

Most of us were not raised to care about how our behavior and words impact children. More than likely most of the adults that we knew as children didn’t care about things like that. “Respect is earned” and apparently not until you’re grown grown (yes, I meant to write that twice).

This particular podcast episode is primarily speaking to parents, HOWEVER, the concept is transferable. Whether it’s your child, your spouse, your partner, your homie… certain things don’t need to be discussed at the start of someone’s day. Arguments first thing in the morning eff up a person’s day. Being confronted about certain topics/in certain ways is a set up for a bad day.

We could do that less. We can apply the Golden Rule. We can think before we speak and empathize. We can think about if we’d want someone yelling at us for the whole ride to work, when we have a big presentation that morning. That’s basically the same thing as yelling at our child (about not taking out the trash, or cleaning their room, or even about their grades) minutes before they enter a classroom to take an exam, or just to do a regular day of school.

It’s not that we never get to voice our concerns. It’s about when and how. It’s about the root of why we’re doing it. If it’s coming from love, we can deliver it in love. If we’re doing it from a place of fear (i.e. “Let me tell you what’s not going to happen around here because I’m afraid that if I don’t you will….”) then that’s something entirely different.

We can be more mindful of how our words and behavior impact our loved ones. And you may be thinking, “They don’t care how their words and behavior impact me.” And maybe that’s true. Sometimes, however, we think we’re being mistreated by them, when their behavior is in retaliation/reaction to our behavior and words toward them that they may not have voiced. Just sayin’.

F*ck the Box | Be Different

So much of society is centered around fitting in and being like everyone else. That didn’t start on social media. From our families to our schools, being different is rarely celebrated. However, our uniqueness is our gift to the world. It’s a huge part of why we’re here.

Meme Image: Beautiful Black woman with locks styled into two Princess Leia puffs on the sides of her head. Beautiful smile. Sunglasses. Stylish black and white striped outfit and bag with gold details. Text states: “ I am more available to be of service to this world by being fully me, than by attempting to be a carbon copy of everbody else.”

I have spent most of my life trying in vain to fit in. I pushed myself to try to comprehend quicker, to catch on to the lingo, to learn what makes people mad and what makes them smile. In a lot of ways those skill sets help me now to connect with people and develop rapport very quickly. However, I built those skills just trying to be a part of the crowd.

One thing that I realize more every day is that coming into yourself is often about reattaching the parts you discarded along the way…. in an attempt to be accepted. It’s as if self-acceptance is about flipping the priority from needing to be what other people want for/from you to what you want for/from yourself.

One of the gifts of not fitting in… and finally accepting it… is that I now realize that I like myself. I like becoming the me that wasn’t enough for others. I am more available to be of service to this world by being fully me than by attempting to be a carbon copy of everyone else.

And I believe the same applies to you.

Today’s episode is about my discoveries/epiphanies this morning about this concept. I’d love for you to check it out, but more importantly, I believe it may benefit you, and I don’t want you to miss that opportunity.

So check it out.

Blessings!

Are They Problems or Solutions?

An odd epiphany occurred today. I realized that sometimes what we see as problems in the short term are actually creating long-term solutions.

Maybe today it’s the worst moment ever, but we have a bigger dream down the road that this horrible moment is actually helping us actualize. From people we meet in low times, to the character we develop. It can be the stories we gain or the testimonies.

There’s so much more going on than we are aware of. But we can train ourselves to begin to look for the blessings in the bullsh*t.
