Trusting Your Intuition: Recognizing Manipulation and Red Flags

When you’re drowning in an ocean, anything floating in that water looks like a potential life raft. You’ll grab onto it hoping and trusting it’s going to save you. It feels like a blessing, the answer to your problem.

Some “evil” people count on that. They seek out desperation because they know it impairs judgment. They know our need will cause us to see treasure in fool’s gold.

I have been fooled so many times like this. And I’d like to tell you a little bit about it.

A Child Is Running My Life

“Most of the beliefs that we hold about who we are, how people treat us and how life works came from guesses we made in childhood. We watched people as they interacted with each other (and us), their body language, facial expressions, shifts in mood/energy, etc. and made decisions about the causes of each effect.

These meanings we defined in childhood are often the same rules we use as we navigate life as adults. Unless we’ve received new information that completely obliterates the old beliefs, we’ll keep those messages for life.”

Our ability to access parts of ourselves has much to do with proximity. In certain environments we thrive. In the company of certain people we’re brave. Around certain others we feel powerless. Sometimes protecting your peace looks like rudeness to other people. The same people who will rudely inquire about your personal business, will call you rude for not responding. And in the past, I’d answer, because nothing mattered more than being “nice.” I had to protect my image.
