I’m Proud to Be Natural Me! is the story of a little girl who is teased because of the texture of her hair. Her mom explains to her that her hair is a part of her identity and that she is beautiful the way God created her. By the end of the story the little girl is saying, “I’ve learned to love what I see. I’m proud to be natural me!”
When I wrote and illustrated my book, I was focused on children accepting their hair texture. As I began to do the work of celebrating and highlighting children with naturally curly hair, I became aware that the spectrum is so broad. I knew I needed to upgrade my book to include more diverse skin tones—I needed to take representation to another level.
So I revised my classic version and created a version that makes me proud. Far more children can find representation in the characters. It really matters.
