That’s None of Your Business

So today I came home and was met with an opportunity to protect my peace.

Someone asked me a question that I knew was an intro to a conversation that I didn’t want to have. And you know what else I realized? What they were asking was none of their business.

Marlene Dillon Empowerment Specialist’s quote: “Your curiosity does not obligate me to provide you with information that is none of your business.” Large bold white text overlays a close-up portrait of a Black woman with natural hair, with “Marlene Dillon Empowerment Specialist” above and the Share & Let’s Live! podcast logo watermark in the lower right; the footer displays “mdillondesigns.com/blog”.

In the past, I would’ve handled things differently. But today I just kept walking. Granted, it could be considered rude not to respond to a person who is clearly speaking to you. AND history has taught me that with this person doing the “right” thing, and engaging them in conversation, was inviting an argument. And I don’t argue. So I kept walking and closed the door behind me.

Sometimes protecting your peace looks like rudeness to other people. The same people who will rudely inquire about your personal business, will call you rude for not responding. And in the past, I’d answer, because nothing mattered more than being “nice.” I had to protect my image.

However, now, I protect my peace. I no longer engage in conversations that I don’t want to be involved in. I will stop midsentence. You’re not gonna force me to have a conversation I don’t want to have, or to open the door for you to disrespect me. I’m not answering your question. Mind your business.

Period.

We’ve got to stop letting people cross our boundaries because society says we’re supposed to behave, respond, etc. in a certain way. If you know that you’re being set up for an argument and the only way to get out of it peacefully is to walk away, let your feet take you toward peace. Or at least that’s what I’m gonna do.

Blessings!
