More SAD in the Fall?

Some people are not fond of the fall and winter. I’m one of them. As much as I try to game myself into an appreciation for the changing leaves, it’s not necessarily that effective, since I deal with S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and have most of my life.

Meme with fall leaves (orange and yellow leaves) background. Text states: “For people with Seasonal Affective Disorder, this time of year can be challenging. Let’s be compassionate and recognize that people may be dealing with challenges we can’t see.”

So in addition to things being heavy right now, and dealing with some tough stuff personally, SAD season is creeping in so I’m taking a little hiatus from some of my regular work and shifting things with my podcast posting schedule to balance out my energy needs.

Sharing some information on S.A.D. because I dealt with it the majority of my life and didn’t realize the correlation with the seasons until a therapist pointed it out to me about 2 years ago. I just knew I’d be depressed for 6 months every year, since I was probably a preteen.

So maybe this will be helpful to you or someone you know.

Here’s some info from a brief Google search:

“Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs during specific seasons, usually fall and winter. It’s characterized by a seasonal pattern of symptoms that can vary from mild to severe.

Some symptoms of SAD include:

Decreased energy or fatigue
Difficulty concentrating or remembering
Changes in appetite or sleep
Unplanned weight changes
Physical aches or pains
Thoughts of death or suicide
Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
Loss of interest in activities
Slowed movements or speech

SAD is more common in people living in places with shorter daylight hours in the winter. It’s sometimes called “winter depression” because symptoms are usually more apparent and severe during that season.

SAD can be treated with light therapy, antidepressant medicines, talk therapy, or vitamin D supplements.

If you think you may be suffering from SAD, you should talk to your health care provider or mental health specialist.

This is for informational purposes only. For medical advice or diagnosis, consult a professional.”

Hope this is helpful to you.

I Don’t Care What I SHOULD

The thing about social media is that we are inundated by other people’s opinions. It can be so exhausting, all the different shoulds as a parent, as a woman, as a business owner, as a… fill in the blank. I’m so over shoulds.

Meme. Image: Man facing camera with shoulders shrugged, elbows bent with hand opened upward as if to say, "So what."
Text states: “I have reached a point in my life where I don’t care what you think I should do. I’m going to do what feels right for ME.” — Marlene Dillon Empowerment Specialist

Today’s podcast is about what I’m choosing to do instead of focusing on what “everybody” thinks I should be doing. And that’s what this month is about…. I am caring less about outside opinions and doing more of what resonates and feels right for me.

It’s Gotta More Than This Pt1

Today, I explore the idea that we all get to do what we came here to do. It’s so often that some people seem to be on this earth purely to support others, because there never seems to be enough time in a day for them to do things for themselves.

Meme Image: 3 children dressed up in pretend play clothes/bigger than them adults clothing Text states: “I have the audacity to believe that there is more to life than this... that despite my roles and responsibilities, at some point, I get to live for me, too.”
— Marlene Dillon Empowerment Specialist
mdillondesigns.com/blog

I got curious about what might be behind that phenomenon and if it’s possible that it is linked to some other events in one’s past. As I worked through this idea… just talking through it, I came to some conclusions… or hypotheses… that have me thinking and ready to explore this further through some inner child work.

I believe this episode was an intro and I’m looking forward to thinking through this some more and making it make sense… for me and for others like me who tend to show up for everyone but ourselves.

Stay tuned. Check out today’s podcast.

Blessings!

Yeah, I’m Caring Less

I have spent the bulk of my life caring TOO MUCH about everything and everybody’s opinions. Today, I decided to just care less about what’s the “right” thing to do (according to society’s rules) and focused on what felt like the next best step (based on my priorities and what matters to me).

“When we entertain everyone’s opinions, we live our lives
with so much angst.
I’m over caring so much about what everybody thinks.
I choose to care less.’”

I ended up having a beautiful day, supporting loved ones in the ways the needed me, AND created beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.

I’m grateful that I threw out the rule book and focused on what matters to me. I plan to do that a lot more…. And this month, I believe #CARELESS is the theme. I’m ready to enjoy my life more, and release those beliefs, expectations, and affirmations that don’t serve me and make life unnecessarily hard. I’m ready to abandon all the “not me” parts and just fully embrace my truth and my way of doing things. And that begins by caring less about how other feel about it and what they’ve got to say about it.

Join me this month for my new #podcast series, #CARELESS.

Blessings!
