Inner Child Work Works

On today’s podcast I talk about inner child work. I share my own story of utilizing it recently to help listeners better understand how helpful inner child work can be in processing life.

work is so helpful toward processing old patterns that continuously come up in your life.”

I also explain how trauma is individual. Meaning that what we may have experienced as traumatic can be viewed as not a big deal to another person. I share my definition of trauma that I think can be really supportive to you or to help you better understand someone you know.

I actually share my own stories that came up during inner child work this week. I believe that hearing what I did and how I did it, as well as how it helped me can be really helpful for you. If you’ve always wondered about inner child work, or dismissed it as BS (like I did before I actually tried it), this is cool and informative episode to check out. So…. check it out, lol.

Blessings!

BTW… I came across the most beautiful song today, “Inner Child” by Aniya Lovelace. Had to share it. Check it out below.

The Randomness of Hope

Sometimes you find yourself in an impossible situation. Well, it seems that way. Those moments in our lives can lead to a sense of helplessness and hopelessness.

“Sometimes people don’t support us in the ways we need because we aren’t honest or vulnerable enough to tell them we’re struggling.”

In school, I learned that depression is anger turned inward. Maybe there are external circumstances that have you pissed, but you feel there’s nothing you can do about them. This feeling, and ruminating on the situation, often leads to that anger turning inward.

This was me… has been me for the last few…. ummm…. pick an increment, any increment. It just keep getting worse, until yesterday, I hit my brink and unloaded all of what was upsetting me on a family member and they met me with love…. and oddly… solutions.

I never really share how I’m feeling for real because I don’t want to make people feel bad. But yesterday it all just came out and it actually turned out that the thing that was really hard for me, was simple to someone else, so they effortlessly took it off my plate!

I didn’t even see that as a possible solution. And if I hadn’t just said f*ck it and said all that was on my mind, I’d still be spiraling deeper into depression.

Sometimes solutions are around us and it takes us releasing control to access them. I’m not encouraging you to lose control and go off on people, but maybe there’s room for a little more honesty. Facts, not accusations. How you’re impacted, not what you believe are others intentions.

Sometimes our loved ones can’t support us because they don’t really know that we’re struggling.

Sometimes being the strong one comes back to bite us. We wonder why no one offers to help, but whenever anyone asks us how we’re doing, we say we’re “fine,” “winning,” “blessed and highly favored.” It’s not that we can’t affirm those things, but how will someone know to offer us help if we always seem to be handling it?

Granted our vulnerability is not for everybody. But it should be at least somebody in our crew that we can tell….

Anywho… check out today’s podcast. I share my recent experience and how things turned around so quickly because I was vulnerable enough to say I was struggling.

Oops… had an ADHD moment and realized at 11:59 CST that I didn’t post the podcast. Giving myself grace. Enjoy.

Quick warning: around 7 minutes in I scream, but I’m fine. I’ll explain what happened right after. I tried to adjust the volume so it won’t be so jarring.

Be Where You Are

I’m grateful that nowadays people speak openly about mental health, seeing therapists, and experiencing our emotions. It is not an uncommon thing to hear (and it’s even become a hashtag) “It’s okay to not be okay.” But what does that even mean?

“Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is acknowledge that you have a right to feel as you feel.” —Marlene Dillon Empowerment Specialist

Not everyone was raised to feel safe in all their emotions. Many grew up in environments where we were expected to be happy, but not too happy, to internalize sadness, and to let it go if we had the audacity to feel angry.

Simply saying, “it’s okay” to feel and emote does not necessarily cause a person to grant themselves permission. We do the bulk of our learning before we turn 7 years old. By then we know the consequences and expectations of responding and reacting with our emotions. And it may take a long time, or intentional effort, to train ourselves out of decades of habits of masking, swallowing, and stifling our emotions.

It may feel weird to allow ourselves to sit in certain emotions, or even wrong. And as someone who is new to this, I will say it still feels super awkward. There is much shame around being unhappy. Maybe in church you were taught that you should be ashamed for being sad given all God has done for you. Or maybe in your upbringing you were labeled “ungrateful” for feeling disappointed when you received a gift that wasn’t quite the one you asked for. Or maybe your parents dared you to cry (threatened your safety if you cried) when you were getting your butt whooped or had just fallen and really hurt yourself.

We have so many reasons for why we hold in our emotions and why we may not feel safe to express them. Today, I gave myself permission to feel the way I feel… and it was new, but it also was the most loving thing I could’ve done.

If this resonates with you at all, check out today’s podcast. I share my own story of where I was today and a bit of how my past impacts that. I hope that through my story you’ll find some peace, comfort, or even courage to be where you are.

Blessings,
