Yeah… Some days I’m deep with the titles. Today, is not one of those days. ![]()

Most of us were not raised to care about how our behavior and words impact children. More than likely most of the adults that we knew as children didn’t care about things like that. “Respect is earned” and apparently not until you’re grown grown (yes, I meant to write that twice).
This particular podcast episode is primarily speaking to parents, HOWEVER, the concept is transferable. Whether it’s your child, your spouse, your partner, your homie… certain things don’t need to be discussed at the start of someone’s day. Arguments first thing in the morning eff up a person’s day. Being confronted about certain topics/in certain ways is a set up for a bad day.
We could do that less. We can apply the Golden Rule. We can think before we speak and empathize. We can think about if we’d want someone yelling at us for the whole ride to work, when we have a big presentation that morning. That’s basically the same thing as yelling at our child (about not taking out the trash, or cleaning their room, or even about their grades) minutes before they enter a classroom to take an exam, or just to do a regular day of school.
It’s not that we never get to voice our concerns. It’s about when and how. It’s about the root of why we’re doing it. If it’s coming from love, we can deliver it in love. If we’re doing it from a place of fear (i.e. “Let me tell you what’s not going to happen around here because I’m afraid that if I don’t you will….”) then that’s something entirely different.
We can be more mindful of how our words and behavior impact our loved ones. And you may be thinking, “They don’t care how their words and behavior impact me.” And maybe that’s true. Sometimes, however, we think we’re being mistreated by them, when their behavior is in retaliation/reaction to our behavior and words toward them that they may not have voiced. Just sayin’.
