I went through most of my life (to date) having no idea I was neurodivergent. Things that were hard for me I attributed to me just not working hard enough. When people all but called me a waste of talent, I agreed with them. I mean, I wasn’t doing anything with my gifts so they must be right… right?

Well, yesterday, I saw a post that nearly brought me to tears. It basically said that much of what people refer to as “willpower” is actually attributed to regulation of certain chemicals in the brain. When I saw that, I immediately knew that all the criticism I’d received over decades—being called “lazy,” and told that I lack “ambition,” and overhearing people discuss how I just don’t want to do anything with myself”—was actually due to something beyond my control.
I knew I was trying but I figured everybody else was trying and succeeding so I was either doing something wrong or not trying hard enough. It’s a relief, and a blessing, and so healing to know that there’s a reason for the struggle… and that I can release the shame.
I talk about this on today’s podcast. A vulnerable post, but worth it because maybe you, or someone else, will see and hear these words and find healing, as I did.
